Are you currently in the middle of leaving New Age Spirituality? If so, here are three things you need to know and expect when going.
First and foremost, I want to congratulate you! Returning to your old ways when you leave new-age spirituality is tempting. Cause, let’s face it, it’s what you know and feels most comfortable with.
Walking away from New Age Spirituality is met with many trials and obstacles. However, when you put your faith and trust in Jesus, you will be surprised just how much easier and simpler life is. Before we get started, I’ll tell you a little bit about my experience with New Age Spirituality and why I left.
From January 2018 to December 2021, I was fully entrenched in spirituality. I constantly had psychic readings and energy healings, meditated, practiced yoga, practiced the Law of Attraction, practiced astrology, read tarot and oracle cards, and the list goes on and on.
Spirituality found me when I was most vulnerable and was experiencing postpartum depression. It gave me hope that I was powerful and that my thoughts created my reality. Instead of believing in God, I believed in “The Universe.”
But as more time passed, I became a spiritual narcissist, if that’s even a thing. A-know-it-all who thought that I was more “woke” and that I knew more about the spiritual realm and “hidden knowledge” than my friends and family. In spirituality, they teach that if someone is no longer “serving you,” you cut them out completely. Needless to say, I lost a lot of friends and caused tension with them because of my ego. Spirituality hurt my friendships, my marriage, my business, everything.
At the end of 2021, this shift happened inside me. The monthly energy readings I used to into didn’t interest me anymore. Nothing in spirituality interested me anymore. Instead, I found myself wanting to read the Bible. When I did, the words leaped off the page. I was spiritually thirsty, and reading the Bible made me feel closer to God than spirituality ever did.
In the last two weeks of December, I had journaled that I wanted the discernment to know if practicing spirituality was okay. Finally, on January 1st, 2022, I got my answer.
On the morning of January 1st, I had a random thought come to my head. I wondered what ever happened to Doreen Virtue. She used to be known in the New Age community for her books and famous “angel number” cards. So, I decided to find a podcast she was on and listen to it. In the episode, she went in depth about how she left spirituality and came to Christ instead. And then, the verse that changed it all. She mentioned Deuteronomy 18: 10-12.
10 “Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, 11 or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. 12 Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord; because of these same detestable practices, the Lord your God will drive out those nations before you.
I wanted to puke. I practiced divination, interpreted omens, went to a witch, and consulted mediums. That day, I couldn’t stop watching more and more videos to find out that everything I was practicing was wrong. That day, I apologized to my husband that I was so deep that I would never return to spirituality again. At that moment, I decided to leave New Age Spirituality to follow Jesus instead.
Although I would like to say when you leave New Age Spirituality, it’s all puppies and rainbows. But quite honestly, it’s nowhere close. But the more you draw closer to God, the easier it gets. The first few months are pretty rough, though. So here are a few things below that you can expect!
Let’s get straight to the point. When you leave New Age Spirituality and accept Jesus as your Savior, you will experience spiritual warfare. Ephesians 6:12 says that our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, powers of this dark world, and spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
For me, spiritual warfare would happen a lot in dreams and would have reoccurring nightmares.
However, spiritual warfare might look different for you. You may experience nightmares, sleep paralysis, sudden losses (friendships, jobs, etc.), hardships, trials, illness (physical and mental), anxiety and depression, and so on. The enemy will come at you from different angles to lure you back into what you once knew. But when you put your faith and trust in Jesus, you will have the tools to fight against the enemy.
The first way to fight against spiritual warfare is to put on the Armor of God. To learn how to put on the Armor of God, head to Ephesians 6:13- 20.
Although it seems obvious, another thing that will help against spiritual warfare is by reading your Bible. When you get into the Word and read what it has to say, you are better equipped for the world when trials and obstacles head your way.
Another way to help spiritual warfare is to call on the name of Jesus. When I would be experiencing spiritual warfare in dreams and calling on the name of Jesus, the attacks in my dreams would stop together. There is power in His name!
One of the best gifts from leaving New Age Spirituality is the gift of discernment. When you receive the gift of discernment, you can easily distinguish and judge what is from God and what is from Satan. (1 Corinthians 12:10)
With the gift of discernment, it is essential always to test the spirits, as mentioned in 1 John 4:1.
“Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God because many false prophets have gone out into the world.”
To test the spirits is to reference your Bible and see if what is being said is true.
For example, one thing you may hear society say a lot, and even more so when watching the Bachelor or Bachelorette, is to follow your heart.
When you look into your Bible, surprisingly enough, it says the complete opposite and not to follow your heart.
Jeremiah 17:9
“The heart is deceitful above all things
and desperately sick;
who can understand it?”
Another example is Matthew 15:19
“For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander.”
Instead, we are told to trust the LORD with all of our hearts, not lean on our understanding. (Proverbs 3: 5-7)
Last but not least, one of the best parts of leaving New Age Spirituality is…
One of the best parts about leaving New Age spirituality and seeking Jesus instead is the overwhelming peace you feel. In New Age, there is no peace. The peace you feel in the New Age is never long-lasting. Practicing meditation, yoga, or energy healing may give temporary peace, but it is always short-lived.
That is the big thing about New Age spirituality, you get small dopamine hits from all of these practices that leave you wanting more, and you get addicted. But when you leave it for Jesus, you can rest easy knowing that you are loved and experience this overwhelming peace.
In John 16:33, before Jesus was arrested and crucified, he said this to his disciples…
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world,”
As believers, we are not promised an easy life. But we experience peace when we trust and lean on Jesus.
Again, congratulations on leaving New Age Spirituality! Although the road to following Jesus may be challenging, it is 1000% worth it.
My prayer for you today comes from Romans 15:13.
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing so that the power of the Holy Spirit may abound in hope.”
